I’ve been a Mother for over 16 years now. Celebrating the gifts of Motherhood hasn’t always been easy, especially when I was being challenged mentally and emotionally with thoughts like – this isn’t what I had expected, I’m not good at this! But after many years and many, many experiences with my kids that left me searching for better ways to be a good Mum, celebrating Motherhood has shifted gear. Its not about being thanked for folding the t-shirts and making the lunches (although this is an important virtue to teach our kids), its about connecting with the greater themes of Motherhood – the bigger picture if you like. Because this is what fills me with awe, inspiration and energy for the sacred role that I undertake day by day, moment by moment.
So what is this greater theme of Motherhood? Look at nature and you will see the energy of the divine feminine at work and you can’t help but be inspired. Day by day, nature is unfolding. When we take the time to look, we see the incredible beauty of her work as new life is created; planets move, oceans respond, eco-systems thrive in harmony – plant, animal and human all playing their part. The natural rhythms of expansion and contraction are at play constantly in nature – we experience them in our hearts and in our minds. We are a part of something so incredible and miraculous, that cannot be denied as being anything less than an awe-inspiring. And we, as women, as Mothers are an embodiment of that potential – the potential to create new life, to nurture it, to flow with the seasons and to move through the cycles with a deep and rooted knowing that everything is being supported by a force that is way more powerful than what we can attempt to control each day through out thoughts and actions.
I have never witnessed any expressions of doubt, fear or resentment in nature. These qualities are a creation of the human mind and obstacles to overcome when we connect with the divine feminine qualities of beauty, creativity, gentleness, nurturing, kindness, compassion and unconditional love.
When we think of these qualities, or more poignantly, when we feel into these qualities, we often associate an outward display that we express to others or we receive from others. Sadness, separateness and unworthiness are all born from the belief that love, beauty, kindness are out there – I need to express kindness to them, or I need to show love to him, or I need to be loved by her. They are all out there. Nature is out there.
However when you embody these qualities of beauty, creativity, gentleness, nurturing, kindness, compassion and unconditional love within yourself, for yourself, for the purpose of filling your own cup, you can then take care of others with a full and nourished heart, mind and soul. By remembering that you are a sacred expression of Mother nature’s creation, only then can you truly connect with the truth, that you are love and you are kindness and you are the divine. When you reconnect, you realise that nothing is out there, its all with in you…
You are the beautiful, awe-inspiring miracle.
